Tool comparison

Umbragarde vs Maltego.

Maltego is a self-service OSINT tool for analysts who want to do the investigation themselves. Umbragarde is a managed intelligence service for clients who need a delivered result — corroborated, written up and legally defensible — without building the capability in-house.

The comparison

Different tools for different needs.

Maltego is a graph-based OSINT platform used by investigators, security researchers and analysts to map relationships between entities — domains, IP addresses, people, companies and social media accounts. It connects to a large ecosystem of data transforms, and it is the tool of choice for many OSINT practitioners who know how to use it. Its community edition is free; commercial licences are required for professional and high-volume use.

Umbragarde is not a tool. It is a service: we conduct the investigation, corroborate the findings, and deliver a written report. The client does not need analyst skills, a Maltego licence, or knowledge of which transforms to run against which data sources. They need a result they can act on.

When Maltego is the right choice

Maltego excels when you have trained analysts in-house, when the investigation is primarily technical (domain infrastructure, threat intelligence, cyber investigations) and when you need to run many searches quickly and iteratively. Its transform ecosystem is deep, and its graph visualisation is genuinely useful for communicating complex relationship maps. Many professional investigators use Maltego as one tool in a broader toolkit.

When Umbragarde is the right choice

Umbragarde is the right choice when you need a result rather than a tool. High-stakes due diligence before a significant transaction, sanctions screening of a counterparty with a complex offshore structure, asset tracing ahead of enforcement proceedings, or corporate intelligence on an acquisition target — these require corroborated, sourced findings that can be used in legal proceedings and presented to senior management. A Maltego graph is a starting point. A delivered Umbragarde report is an answer.

Can they be used together?

Yes. Some of our clients use Maltego for initial scoping — identifying the entities and relationships in play — and instruct Umbragarde to conduct the deeper investigation, corroborate findings and produce the deliverable. The tool handles the data aggregation; we handle the intelligence.
