ComplyAdvantage is an automated AML screening platform — fast, scalable, API-driven. Umbragarde is an investigation service for the cases where automation returns a result but you need to know what the result actually means.
ComplyAdvantage provides real-time AML screening against sanctions lists, PEP databases and adverse media for regulated financial services firms. It is designed for scale: high-volume onboarding, automated ongoing monitoring, API integration into onboarding workflows. For firms processing thousands of customers, it is essential infrastructure.
Umbragarde operates at the other end of the spectrum. When a significant transaction, a complex counterparty or an elevated-risk relationship requires deeper investigation — beyond what any automated platform can deliver — we conduct the work, corroborate the findings and deliver a written report. We are not a monitoring platform. We are what you reach for when the monitoring platform flags something and you need to understand it.
Automated screening matches against structured data: names, dates of birth, nationalities, entity identifiers. It does not trace beneficial ownership chains through multiple corporate registries. It does not identify that the company you are onboarding is owned through a Cyprus holding company, which is beneficially controlled by a person related to a designated individual. It does not read local-language court records in Ukraine. It does not find the adverse media that was published in a regional Russian newspaper and never made it into a global news aggregator.
These are not edge cases. For regulated firms onboarding customers from high-risk jurisdictions, dealing with complex offshore structures, or conducting business in sectors with elevated financial crime exposure, they are the norm.
The two are most commonly used in sequence. ComplyAdvantage — or any automated AML platform — runs on every customer, at every stage. When it flags a match, or when the onboarding team identifies a customer whose risk profile warrants deeper investigation, Umbragarde conducts the enhanced due diligence: tracing the ownership structure, identifying the source of funds, cross-referencing against open-source intelligence, and delivering a report that answers whether the relationship is acceptable.
Automated screening sets the floor. OSINT-grade investigation raises the ceiling for the customers who need it.
ComplyAdvantage charges on a subscription basis, typically per-entity screened, with pricing varying by volume and features. Umbragarde charges per mandate — scoped individually based on the subject, jurisdiction and depth required. There is no subscription, and no ongoing cost between instructions.
