Dow Jones Risk & Compliance is a structured data product: curated PEP and sanctions data, adverse media from a large source set, and company information for screening at scale. Umbragarde is the investigation you conduct when the structured data is insufficient — which, for high-risk mandates, it often is.
Dow Jones Risk & Compliance (DJRC) provides curated data on politically exposed persons, sanctions lists, adverse media, state-owned enterprise connections and regulatory enforcement actions. It is a well-regarded enterprise data product used by large financial institutions for compliance screening, third-party risk management and onboarding workflows. Its main competitive strength is the breadth and curation of its underlying data, backed by Dow Jones's global editorial and data infrastructure.
Umbragarde does not compete with DJRC as a data product. We conduct investigations: discrete mandates for clients who need a delivered answer on a specific person, entity or structure, with findings corroborated across multiple source categories and presented in a written report that can be used in legal proceedings, board presentations or senior management decisions.
DJRC, like any structured database, contains what has been entered into it. It covers what has been published in sources it monitors, at the level of curation it applies. What it does not contain:
Firms using DJRC — and its peers, including World-Check and LexisNexis — typically use Umbragarde for the cases where the standard screening raises a question that requires a human answer. The database flags an adverse media match; we investigate whether it relates to the person in front of you. The PEP screening identifies a politically exposed person; we establish the nature and current level of their political exposure, and whether their stated source of wealth is consistent with what the open record shows. The third-party risk score flags a supplier as elevated risk; we investigate whether the risk is real and whether the relationship is defensible.
The database is the triage layer. The investigation is the answer.
Dow Jones Risk & Compliance is primarily an enterprise product, priced and designed for compliance teams at financial institutions running high volumes of checks. Law firms and family offices conducting enhanced due diligence on a specific counterparty, acquisition target or new client relationship typically do not need an enterprise data subscription for one or two mandates a month. Umbragarde operates on a per-mandate basis — scoped, priced and delivered for the specific investigation, without a subscription, minimum commitment or enterprise contract.
