The debtor who moved abroad.

Contact had gone silent and correspondence was being returned. The debtor had left the jurisdiction, and with them went any prospect of service. We established a current location — lawfully, from open records — and the matter could resume.

The matter

A stalled recovery, and a debtor gone quiet.

The brief

Our client's solicitors had reached an impasse. A debt matter that ought to have been straightforward had stalled because the debtor could no longer be found at any known address. Correspondence went unanswered, and what had been a domestic matter had apparently become a cross-border one. Recovery proceedings could not be progressed without a current address — and the only addresses on file were months out of date. Our instruction was to locate the individual to an address usable for legal service, using only lawful means.

The work

We began with the fragmentary detail available: a name, the last known address, a rough timeline of departure, and the general region the debtor was thought to have moved to. From that starting point, we worked through open sources methodically — public registries, electoral and property records in the receiving country, professional and business filings, and the debtor's own modest but telling digital footprint. A business registration in the destination country, made in the debtor's own name, proved the decisive anchor. It was a matter of public record — lawfully obtained, precisely sourced, and sufficient to establish both the jurisdiction and the address we needed. We did not use any method that would be inadmissible, and our report set out, step by step, the basis for each finding so that instructing solicitors could rely on it confidently.

The outcome

The client's legal team had a verified current address, with a clear audit trail of how it had been established. Service was effected through the appropriate channel for that jurisdiction. The recovery matter, which had been dormant for want of a simple fact, moved forward. The debtor's disappearance had not been as thorough as intended.
